Crock Pot Roast ~ A Delicious Week Day Dinner!

A roast may seem like an impossible mid week meal, but if you pull out your crock pot you will find it is not only possible, but easy. It doesn’t matter if you have a pork, beef or even venison roast in your freezer it can easily become Wednesday nights dinner in no time at all.

You can make a well balanced meal out of roast with veggies you probably already have sitting in the kitchen. Potatoes, carrots, onions and green beans go great with roast. Make sure you cut your potatoes in equal size pieces, so they will cook evenly. You can add some potatoes to the bottom of the crock pot, since they take the longest to cook. You can even make up a packet of gravy and add it to the potatoes at the bottom. Add your carrots around the edges of your roast. Top your roast with the onions to keep them from turning to mush. If you want to add a splash of color add your green beans about 30 minutes before your cooking time is up. This will keep them from getting mushy.

You can create a wide variety of flavors for your roast depending on the seasoning you use. A classic roast can be created by just adding a package of soup mix. You could have a creamier gravy by adding cream of mushroom soup. If you like a more Italian flavor feel free to sprinkle your roast with Italian seasoning or the herbs and spices that make it up.

When you add spices you can just add in dry spices at the beginning. They will be fine to flavor throughout the cooking time. If you are using fresh herbs it’s better to wait until the last hour of cooking to add them. They will quickly infuse the roast with flavor.

So how long are you going to cook this roast? Generally you can count on at least 6 to 10 hours for your roast to cook. If you look at the cooking directions on your roast packaging you can easily convert the cooking time in the oven to the crock pot. If it recommends cooking it in the oven for 50 minutes to 3 hours you are looking at 4 to 6 hours on high in the crock pot or 8 to 18 hours on low in the crock pot.

This long cooking time for a roast makes it perfect to make during the week. You can easily add your meat and vegetables before your go to work. You can even throw in a frozen roast. This will take a little longer because it has to first use the heat to defrost the meat, but it works out perfectly when you are going to be gone the whole day. I find a 2 to 3 pound roast added frozen comes out perfectly after about 8 or 9 hours. If you have a programmable crock pot, even better. You can set it to switch to warm mode after the meat reaches the appropriate temperature.

As you can see, crock pot roast can be made in many different ways to fit the taste and needs of your family. You may have thought there was no way to pull off cooking a roast in the middle of the week, but when you pull out your crock pot it’s a snap.
